Paris View breaks >>

Paris is a seductive capital, legendary for its cuisine, fashion, art collections and architectural beauty. It is a vibrant international city and the heart of France's political, economic, social and cultural life. Reminders of the past are present in Paris, and change comes in smaller ways - in fashions, food styles and shop facades.

Parisians are still as willing to take to the streets in protest as they were during the Revolution, although they can also demonstrate a strong conservative, conformist streak. The city is making a concerted effort to help visitors feel welcome and Parisians are friendlier and more helpful than they are sometimes reputed to be.

Paris has no shortage of things to see and do, but if you spend your visit dashing between places such as the Eiffel Tower, Notre-Dame, the Louvre and Sacre-Couer you'll miss out on the essence of the city. The secret is to enjoy the humble pleasures as well as the world-famous landmarks and attractions.

Arc De Triomphe
Arc De Triomphe
The Arc De Triomphe is a symbol of military might, modelled on the triumphal arches of ancient Rome. It crowns the western tip of the Champs-elysees, a bustling avenue packed with cinemas, shops and cafes.

The Louvre
The Louvre is one of the most famous art galleries in the world, with a vast collection spanning thousands of years, from ancient sculptures to mid-19th century European paintings. Whilst visiting its 35,000 works you will need to be selective!

Notre-Dame
Notre-Dame is as famous a symbol of Paris as the Eiffel Tower, with around 10 million peope entering its doors each year. Visit in the morning, when the cathedral is also at its brightest, to admire the spectacular architecture.

Eiffel Tower
Whether you see it as a 'hollow candlestick' or an elegant emblem of Paris, you can't ignore the Eiffel Tower. Its sleek iron silhouette, rising up 324m (1,063ft), finds its way into many of the city's best views.

Montmartre
The hilltop village of Montmarte has a split personality. There is the vibrant square of Place du Tertre and the front steps of Sacre-Coeur, contrasted with quiet cobbled streets, white-washed cottages and atmosphere of a small village.

Sacre-Coeur
The mighty Sacre-Coeur basilica is one of Paris's most prominent landmarks, shimmering at the top of Montmartre's hill. Its eastern-inspired dome is the second highest point in Paris and the views from the top stretch up to 50km (30 miles).
