Cannes View breaks >>

Think Cannes, think movies and film stars, expensive boutiques, palatial hotels and paparazzi. After all, it is one of the world's most chic resorts - the 'queen of the coast', 'pearl of the Riviera' - twinned with Beverly Hills and, within France, second only to Paris for shopping and major international cultural and business events, including the world-famous Cannes International Film Festival.

With so much glitz and glamour, it's easy to forget Cannes' humble origins as a simple fishing village, named after the canes and reeds of the surrounding marshes, since transformed into luxury yacht havens. In the 1920s, Cannes adopted a rhyme: 'Menton's dowdy, Monte's brass, Nice is rowdy, Cannes is class!'. However, it wasn't until the 1930s that Cannes became a summer resort, made fashionable by visitng Americans, including Zelda Fitzgerald.

Admittedly Cannes lacks the great museums, galleries and monuments of other large resorts or towns, but there is always plenty to do, with its casinos, fairs, beaches, boat trips to the Îles de Lerins, and its luxury shopping boutiques which flank the waterfront and the main shopping street, rue d'Antibes.

Lérins Abbey
On the small island of Île Saint-Honorat, just off the coast of Cannes, this inhabited Cistercian monastery was founded in the 5th century and features seven chapels. Today, monks cultivate the vineyards to produce wine and liquers here.

Palais des Festivals
This futuristic complex is the home of the prestigious Cannes Film Festival and plays host to some of the world's best film-makers every year. With 18 auditoriums and over 25,000 sq. metres of space, the Palais is also used for exhibitions.

Fort Royal
Perched off the coast of Cannes on the island of St. Marguerite, the historic Fort Royal was once a state prison during the 17th century and is most famously known as the 'home' of the Man in the Iron Mask. Today is houses the Musée de la Mer.

Villa Rothschild
Erected in the late 19th century for Baroness James de Rothschild, this eclectic villa combines elements of Renaissance and Baroque architecture, and features luxurious marble columns and flourishing rose gardens.

La Croisette
The undisputed heart of Cannes, this luxurious boulevard is littered with designer shops, upmarket hotels, lavish nightlife and some of the rest restaurants on the French Riviera. From here, you can catch spectacular views of the nearby islands.

Le Suquet
The picturesque Old Quarter and original fisherman's area of Cannes is perched high on a hill offering beautiful views over the old port. Climb the winding cobbled streets and enjoy a bite to eat at charming, traditional restaurants that surround them.
