Granada City Breaks

Granada is the capital of the province with the same name Granada, situated at the base of the Sierra Nevada mountains in the eastern part of the autonomous Andalucian region. The striking backdrop of the mountains, coupled with the meeting of the three rivers, the Beiro, the Darro and the Genil provides a beautiful natural setting. Granada is 738m above sea level, but only an hour from the Mediterranean coast, or head for the mountains to enjoy skiing and other alpine recreations.

The city itself on the other hand is a flourishing centre, the 13th largest urban area in Spain, with a significant student population, that boasts a wealth of restaurants, bars, clubs and cafes especially in the busy streets around the cathedral, as well as a lovely old quarter, the Albaycin with delightful steep narrow streets to explore.

With a rich varied history, Granada has been influenced by a number of cultures that can still be seen around the city, from Moorish castles and Christian Renaissance splendours and even a recently constructed Islamic mosque. The most impressive structure must be the stunning Alhambra, the Moorish citadel and even the Sacromonte Hill that overlooks the city was once home to a large gypsy community.
