Grand Casino
The 17th century of the Spanish viceroys of Naples was extended in the 18th century by the Bourbons and altered in the 19th century by the French. It houses the historic Biblioteca Nazionale (National Library) and a series of grandiose state rooms.
Monaco Cathedral
This is the main square in the city and is surrounded by some of the most elegant buildings such as the Royal Palace, church of San Francesco di Paola and the Teatro San Carlo, one of Italy’s most beautiful opera houses.
Prince's Palace
The world's best Roman town, frozen in time by the catasrophic eruption of Vesuvius in AD 79. Founded as a Greek colony, it thrived as a chic holiday resort for rich Romans and a trading place to export local fish and wine products.
Oceanographic Museum
A huge castle erected in 1282 and converted into a royal residence by the Aragonese. Today it houses the council offices and the Museo Civico that exhibits paintings and bronze from the 15th century to today.
Japanese Gardens
Built between 1887 and 1891, this is not simply a shopping centre, it is deemed to have one of the most stunning interiors in southern Italy and was designed by Emanuele Rocco. The arcade features an impressive mosaic of the zodiac at its centre.
Monaco Opera House
A 13th century Gothic cathedral dedicated to San Gennaro, patron saint of Naples. The first chapel on the right contains two phials of his blood, said to liquify three times a year. Also part of the complex are a baptistery and Renaissance crypt.
