Nice is one of the biggest cities along the Mediterranean coast of France and the capital of the Riviera. It certainly buzzes with life. There's an old Italian corner to discover, plus some of the top art galleries of the region, and if you're here in the two weeks before Lent, you're bound to get swept up by the colourful frenzy of the Mardi-Gras carnival.

Nice's history has been influenced by successive owners, including the Ligurians, the Greeks and the Romans, and only became part of France when the Italians (who called it Nizza) handed it over in 1860. In the 19th century it became a chic winter resort, numbering Queen Victoria among its illustrious visitors.

Many splendid belle-epoque buildings line the famous broad promenade des Anglais along the seafront. The Paillon promenade divides the new town from the Italianate jumble of the old quarter, where you'll find interesting little shops, cafes and churches.
