Despite Polish cuisine having a reputation for being heavy and stodgy, Krakow has established itself as a centre of international cuisine. In the city you will find a plethora of world-class gourmet restaurants serving a variety of different specialities influenced by German, Russian, Italian and Turkish cuisine. Signature dishes in Krakow include goulash, a variety of soups including czernina (duck's blood), pierogi (dumplings) and anything incorporating pork.
During the years of communism in Poland, a range of café style bars called “milk bars” were opened to accommodate locals with cheap food subsidized by the state. You can still find many of these eateries dotted around the city, offering a cheap yet tasty range of Polish dishes.
Across Krakow you will discover many types of estblishment to cater for every taste and budget, whether it be an up-market French bistro to an authentic Italian trattoria, you'll never be short of options. Be sure to sample some local cuisine before you leave and perhaps try Poland's favourite fast food, zapiekanka, a halved crisp baguette covered with mushrooms and cheese.
