During the day a popular excursion has to be to join one of the many tours available at local wineries to see the production process of the infamous local port wine and of course to enjoy the free sampling that takes place at the end.
In the evening, however, the city really comes to life with a busy social scene. There are many pubs and cafes open late into the night, with some of the bars and nightclubs not really getting going until the early hours. Do not be surprised if some of the most popular venues don’t get busy until after midnight.
There is a great variety of nightlife available from cultural venues including a number of theatres and live music venues, a few cinemas and two casinos as well as a multitude of cocktail bars and fashionable lounges. Particularly busy areas include the Ribeira district and downtown Rua Galeria de Paris and Rua Candido dos Reis.
During the warm summer months many of the bars and cafes provide outdoor seating where you can sit and enjoy a drink while you watch the world go by and take in some of the stunning night time views of the city.
