Entertainment
Despite being an Islamic country, Morocco has a laid-back attitude towards alcohol, with bars in most tourist areas staying open late and serving good value locally produced wines and beers, as well as more expensive imports.
From discos to belly dancing, Marrakech has something of a reputation for its nightlife.
Traditional Cafes
For a more traditional evening, head for the medina with its cafes, food stalls and street entertainment, all centred around Jemaa-el-Fna. As the sun goes down the square gradually empties and the musicians take over, playing their haunting, hypnotic melodies on a mixture of mandolins, guitars, flutes, drums and violins - a fusion of the Andalucian, Arab, Berber and African influences from the last thousand years of the city.
Riads
Several of the hotels in this area have rooftop cafes overlooking the square where you can sit and watch the proceeding below whilst enjoying a meal and a drink. A number of riads, the historic merchant's houses, have been converted into upmarket restaurants where you can indulge in a huge feast with music and dancing.
Bars & Nightclubs
If you'd prefer something a little more modern, most of the city's bars, as well as a wide variety of restaurants, bistros and pavement cafes, are clustered along Avenue Mohammed V, especially around Place Abdel Moumen ben Ali. You'll also find a number of discos and nightclubs in this area, although those located in the hotels cater more to western tastes and tend to be less intimidating.
Look slightly further away from the city centre and you'll find complexes such as The Palais des Congres, in Avenue de France, and Café Oued El Had, in Avenue Casablanca, with three or four trendy bars inside, all open until 2am.
So whether you wish to wander and take in the sights of the city after dark, sit and listen to the evocative traditional sounds, throw yourself into an extravagant evening of feasting or dance the night away, Marrakech has plenty to offer.
