Shopping on the Amalfi Coast

Along with the Sorrento Peninsula, South of Naples the best shopping can be found in the tiny villages of the Amalfi Coast, where chic boutiques sell eye-catching beachwear and cool and elegant resort and evening wear. Positano is good for clothing, Ravello for its coral making and Amalfi is renowned for handmade paper stationary, scented candles, jewellery and intricate lace.

There’s a wealth of bright ceramics on sale all down this coast, especially in Vietre – look for the huge serving platters and decorative stands of pottery lemons and oranges. The traditional crafts also includes a number of wooden ornaments, many adorned with wood inlays, which involves small pieces of wood arranged into patterns and pictures. These items are all perfect gifts or as keepsakes to take home with you.

The area is noted for Limóncello, a lemon-based liqueur. It’s great as an after-dinner digestivo or mixed with champagne or prosecute. Local wines, grown on the rich volcanic soil of Vesuvius, are excellent and many of the villages have a good enoteca where you can sample before you buy.

Maria Lampo, Via Pasitea, Positano - Lampo means in a flash and this fashion store got its name after World War II when the owner ran up easy-to-wear pretty holiday clothes in a flash. There is a huge range of feminine beach and street wear and laid-back quietly elegant clothes for men.

Medea, Via della Marra 14, Ravello - This coastal region is renowned for its ceramics but if you are looking for something away from the bright fruit bowls then this shop may have the perfect item for you. Handmade vases, plates, tiles and much more are displayed and sold at a large range of prices.

Profumi della Costiera, Via Trinita 37, Ravello - All bottles of Limóncello distilled here carry the Indicazione Geografica Proteta (IGP) quality seal of approval that guarantees that no preservatives or additives have been used in its production. Hand painted bottles provide the perfect gift or keepsake.
