Durham City falls in the north east region of England that is in the area east of the Pennines running from the Scottish border to south Yorkshire. The Pennines themselves create a natural shelter to the region creating a barrier to the prevailing westerly winds, however their high altitude, with moors rising to well over 600 meters and peaking at 893 meters at Cross Fell, creates an environment that is more commonly wet, dull and cool.
On the other hand, spring and summer seasons can be quite reasonable, with comfortably high temperatures and clear skies providing a beautiful atmosphere for an enjoyable holiday.
Be careful though, as with weather predictably typical to the area, during any short break you should prepare yourself for rain at any time and a forecast that can change at a moments notice.
